My name is Kendra Sleeman and I am currently a ceramics major at the Alberta University of the Arts. I am from London, Ontario where I attended BealArt, a specialty art program. This program introduced me to ceramics, which allowed me to discover how to view art in a three-dimensional aspect, while combining two-dimensional features, like, illustrations onto the surface design of these forms. My art practice grows with me, incorporating myself into every piece.
My art focuses on utilitarian objects and the function they hold. I put a great deal of personal influences into each piece, work, and find inspiration from my childhood, family, and heritage. In each piece I create, I try to put personal meaning into the form of the object or in the surface design. The viewer’s personal connection to the piece may not be identical to mine, but I believe that their relationship does not need to be the same for the meaning of the objects to be valid.
