Jennifer (Gwen) Obst is an emerging artist from Lacombe, Alberta. She has completed a diploma in Visual Arts from Red Deer College in 2018 and her Bachelor of Fine Arts, ceramics major with distinction from Alberta University of the Arts in 2020. She works in both 2D and 3D media: paint, pastels, and both functional and sculptural ceramic. This past year her focus has been on developing her ceramics business, The Beagle and The Alchemist, creating functional wares with abstract glazes. Her work has been shown locally in Red Deer and Lacombe.
My work is inspired by the world around me. From the abstract shapes of microscopic creatures to the humble mushroom growing on the forest floor. The way the clouds move in our sky, to interstellar nurseries far away, to the shadow created by a fallen leaf. The colours and shapes of this world (and beyond) are what inspire the abstract features of my work. By manipulating the shapes and colours on my work I am able to create new spaces that present themselves differently to each viewer. I am interested in the connection these unique spaces offer and the conversation they provide.
