YVONNE KUSTEC is a Calgary based artist whose work explores theories around disconnection and its effect on image, identity, and femininity. Her work contemplates the ways in which we perceive and present ourselves, specifically as women, through the lens of social media, of expectation, of perceived roles of femininity, of misogyny, toxicity and of societal ideals. Through clay, through sculpting the body and through contemplating the regenerative power of nature she aims to navigate this loss of connection to self, to identity and to love by re-engaging with the feminine spirit.
My work explores the relationship between the feminine body and the outside forces that shape¨ mark¨ manipulate¨ imprint¨ alter¨ weaken or transform it. Contemplating the ways in which we perceive and present ourselves¨ specifically as women¨ through the lens of social media¨ of expectation¨ of perceived roles of femininity¨ of misogyny¨ of societal ideals and broken relationships. I attempt to face those representations and reclaim them as strength. Exploring amalgamating elements of nature with the body in an attempt to rebuild a connection to identity and to femininity through engaging with the magical regenerative powers inherent in nature.
