Mika Haykowsky creates through playful, multidisciplinary projects involving intimacy, queer ecology, collective healing, and textures of the body. She recently exhibited video in Florida, USA and ceramics in Trondheim, Norway. Mika received an MFA in from NTNU (Norway), and a BFA from the University of Alberta. Her first solo show was presented at Latitude 53 mid-pandemic, “Superspreader,” for which she was interviewed on CKUA. She was an Emerging Artist Apprentice at The Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts and has completed 4 artist residencies in the last 4 years. She continues to seek out artistic challenges through collaborating, skill sharing, and living in community. Her work is supported by the Alberta Foundation of the Arts and the Edmonton Arts Council.
My artistic practice blends sensual mediums: ceramics, video art, sculpture, songwriting, soundscapes, drawing, and community engagement. The red thread through my works is intimacy and the body. My immersive installation work is a site of union between objects designed for the body, digital reproductions of my body, and your present body. Broadly, my work is a reaction to impacts of consumerism, labour, and isolation on the body. I am motivated by intimate experiences with nature and the evolving mutations in the ecological world, including human fertility and extinction.
