Kacey Hughes is from Vancouver, British Columbia. She is currently working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and is just finishing her first year studying ceramics. She is a member of the Fraser Valley Potter’s Guild, and her work will be on display this summer in their Made of Clay 2018 show.
My recent work is functional pottery that explores the relationship between the functional form of a piece and its aesthetic, decorative elements. Being relatively new to the world of ceramics, experimentation is a large part of my work. I have an intuitive approach to making, and I begin each new piece with uncertainty and excitement about its eventual final form. The surface decoration of each piece has unique, hand carved patterns or drawn designs that are equally intuitive, and inspired by the unique shape of the piece. I am thrilled to have found a material that lends itself well to creativity and transformation.
