‘Home’ Medalta’s Artists in Residence Alumni who have made Medicine Hat home and their cultural impact on the city.
Reception: Friday November 25th 6-8pm
Exhibition: Nov 25th – March 18. 2017
Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada.
Set against the dramatic cliffs of the South Saskatchewan River in Medicine Hat, Alberta, the 150 acre Historic Clay District was once home to some of Canada’s most important clay factories, providing Canada with over 75% of its ceramics.
After the industry declined many of these factories sat abandoned for decades. Through the work of dedicated creatives and grass root community effort, the old factories are being refurbished into dynamic cultural hubs. The unique Medalta Potteries site now provides the setting for a living, working museum, contemporary gallery, vibrant education centre, and the Medalta International Artists in Residence Program.
Artists come from all over the world to work in Medalta’s studios, bringing their unique experiences, techniques and ideas to the Historic Clay District.
This exhibition celebrates the artists who have decided to make Medicine Hat their home after completing their residency and the cultural impact this influx of artists with international careers has brought to the community of Medicine Hat.
Participating Artists:
Les Manning , Aaron Nelson, Liz Burritt, Jenn Demke Lange, Jason Lange, Jim Etzkorn, Xanthe Isbister, Koi Neng Liew, Annette ten Cate, Jenna Stanton, Noriko Masuda, Susan McKinnon, Adam Lefebvre.
A portion of this exhibition will be traveling to the 2017 Toronto Design Festival & WantedDesign Brooklyn as part of the ‘Outside the Box’ Exhibition.
Shipped across the country in Bankers boxes, the Toronto Design Offsite Festival presents a dozen distinct national and international showcases. Working with local correspondents, each box includes original works from local designers, reflecting the particular resources and makers of each area. This fifth edition of ‘Outside the Box’ features responses on the theme “discovery.” For us, discovery is the essence of this project, where we can find something new within each box. Discovery inspires, invites play and travel, and exposes us to new ideas, inspirations, and experiences.
Medicine Hat’s box will showcase several of the artists from our feature exhibition ‘home’ inviting viewers to discover the work and sentiments from Medalta’s artist in residence program who have chosen to stay in the community after completing their residency.
‘Outside the Box’ will be presented during the Toronto Design Offsite Festival, January 16-22, 2017.
The exhibit will also travel for presentation at WantedDesign, part of NYCxDESIGN in May 2017.
