October 2, 2025ARTIST STATEMENT:
My studio practice explores the creative potential of functional ceramics through risk-taking and experimentation. I work closely with clay, responding to its natural qualities and allowing the process to guide me. I often embrace irregularities in the material and use unconventional installation methods.
These choices challenge traditional ideas of perfection and highlight the beauty of unique forms. I’m drawn to the balance between order and chaos—how it shapes both the look and strength of each piece. Through this approach, I aim to push the limits of function and form, creating work that feels alive, personal, and evolving.
BIO:
Danya Mayne is a Calgary-based ceramic artist, born in British Columbia, Canada. Her practice explores the intersection of functionality, nature, and design, drawing inspiration from landscape architecture and outdoor environments. Influenced by living plants and architectural forms, her work conveys elemental themes—fire, water, and growth—through techniques such as glaze spraying and atmospheric firing. These processes culminate in sculptural vessels and site-responsive installations designed for intimate outdoor spaces.
Graduating this year from the Alberta University of the Arts, Danya is dedicated to elevating everyday experiences through ceramics that foster reflection and deeper connections to place.
