Ceramic Artist Rob Froese’s upcoming exhibition Call-and-Response Rhythm · Tone · Composition at the Yuill Gallery at Medalta, combines his backgrounds in visual art and music, featuring ceramics, wood, and paint elements that express parallels between material, rhythm, and sound improvisation.
Through site-sensitive installation, these sculptural assemblages and individual objects make equivalencies between elements of both disciplines: spatial balance with harmony/dissonance, physical distance between objects with tonal intervals, colour with frequency, negative space with silence, physical composition with syncopation and rhythm.
A disciplined, skill-based improvisational working method attuned to repetition, chance, call and response, underlies both activities.
