FIRED UP! May 2nd Open House @ Medalta
April 1, 2026Announcing the Selected Artist for the 2027 Community Artist Exhibition
Medalta in the Historic Clay District is pleased to announce the selected artist for the 2027 Community Artist Exhibition in the Yuill Family Gallery.
The Community Artist Exhibition is a new annual program that supports and celebrates creative voices within the artist community. By offering this exhibition, Medalta reinforces its role as a place where heritage and creativity come together to preserve the historic stories of our site while fostering contemporary artistic expression.
The initiative opens the Yuill Family Gallery to artists from across Canada, creating opportunities to share new ideas and perspectives beyond Medalta’s regular exhibition programming. The 2027 exhibition marks the first year of the program, with the selected artist helping to inaugurate this new opportunity for artists at Medalta.
Our Open Call for Exhibition Proposals ran from November 10 to December 15, 2025, and received an enthusiastic response from artists across the country. In total, over 70 proposals were submitted from artists working in a wide range of mediums and artistic approaches.
Applications were reviewed through a multi-stage juried selection process. Proposals were evaluated by a jury panel using a structured scoring rubric. The jury considered the strength of each artistic concept, the quality of the submitted work, the clarity and cohesion of the exhibition proposal, and the project’s suitability for Medalta’s Yuill Family Gallery and its broad public audience.
After careful review and discussion, the jury selected Patricia Lortie as the artist for the 2027 Community Artist Exhibition.
About the Artist
Patricia Lortie is a Québec-born, Calgary-based visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and community-based art. For over twenty-five years she has exhibited widely across Western Canada in public, artist-run, and commercial galleries. Her work often takes the form of immersive and contemplative environments that explore our physical, emotional, and ancestral relationships with the natural world.
Her upcoming exhibition at Medalta will include works from her series The Keepers, Liquid Abstract, and Skiff, which reflect her ongoing exploration of environment, memory, and connection to place.
In addition to her exhibition work, Lortie is deeply committed to community engagement. She has led numerous collaborative and public art projects, working closely with schools, Indigenous Elders, francophone communities, and local organizations. Her practice reflects a long-standing interest in creating spaces that invite reflection, connection, and shared experience.
Patricia’s exhibition will be presented in the Yuill Family Gallery from March 19 to May 1, 2027.
