Explore the depths of surface design and form-surface integration in this five-day intensive workshop with Dawn Candy. Beginning with forming several pieces and ending with layering various surface design techniques, participants will learn to create their own rich surfaces embedded with personal imagery. Discussions will focus on the opportunities and possibilities available through combining various surface techniques and materials on greenware. Demonstrations will cover throwing, slip trailing, inlay, resists, and under-glaze brushwork.

This course is open to intermediate/advanced levels of ceramic experience, some bisque ware will be required.

$695 + gst

Post-secondary students are eligible to receive a 25% discount on the course fee with proof of current student ID. Maximum 2 students per workshop.

Fee includes:

• 24 hour studio access
• Full access to the entire Historic Clay District site, including tours
• All firings
• Use of shop glazes and underglazes

Workshop Participants responsible for:

• Bisqueware
• Clay – can be purchased on site
• Various tools and materials (you will be notified of what to bring)

Cancellation/Refund Policy:

A full refund (less a $25 administration fee) is available if you cancel by the registration deadline (June 19). If Medalta cancels, or if you need to cancel due to medical reasons (documentation required), you will receive a full refund. For cancellations 2 weeks prior to the workshop, a refund of 50% of the total fee is available. If you cancel within 2 weeks of the start of the workshop or during the workshop, we will be unable to issue any refund.

About Dawn

Dawn Candy is a visual artist living and working in Red Deer, Alberta. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Lethbridge where she studied analytic philosophy and religious studies. She then went on to achieve her diploma in Visual Art from Red Deer College. Currently she teaches several community art classes in addition to making her pottery.

“I make pottery that concerns perception and change: growth, erosion, order and disorder. Inspired by pattern and by landscape, my pieces often reference natural theatre like wind whipped leaves and grasses, turbulent skies or melting ice and snow. I work to depict visual movement across or down the surface of my pottery and also to embed movement into that surface, revealing and concealing layers. I’m interested in how nature becomes distilled, embodied, and morphed through human perception and imagination into literature, myth, art, ritual, and superstition. My work feature surfaces that attempt to depict an almost magical interpretation of the world; I want the imagery to seem familiar but nuanced and a little unreal.”
