Josianne Des Rochers

BIO/ARTIST STATEMENT

Based in Montréal, Josianne Desrochers (JOSIE DAISY), has a Bachelor degree in visual arts from NSCAD University where she invested her interests in drawing, sculpture and ceramics. Won over by the complexity and the versatility of ceramics, she pursued her path by attending multiple art residencies in Alberta, Danemark, Japan and Hungary. While doing so, she worked in an art center coordinating exhibitions, art classes, studios and events as well as taking part in the administration of an illustration publishing house.

She dedicated herself fully to her practice when she fell in love with throwing during her last residency. This new love completely changed the course of her practice, shifting it from conceptual sculptures to functional objects. Other than the techniques, Desrochers was attracted by the accessibility of the craft to the grand public and the intimacy that occurs between an object and its owner. As she is discovering this new path, she is laying the groundwork of her new practice by focussing on efficient designs, durability and functionality. Throughout the creation of objects, Desrochers shares her process and the stories hiding behind every piece with the public to bring forward its soul and meaning. Thus, contrasting handmade object to the emptiness of goods created to follow the latest trend and destined to a short life time. Creating everyday objects seems to be a little revolution against mass production, overconsumption and aesthetic obsolescence for Desrochers.
