Donna Zubot is a multi-disciplinary artist. A native of the prairies, she grew up in rural Saskatchewan. Her art pays homage to the atmosphere of her thought processes that were permeated by the remoteness of her upbringing.

She has had her paintings, drawings, and photography shown in numerous galleries and shows throughout Saskatchewan. Currently, Zubot is exploring clay techniques towards creating sculptural vessels.

Donna Zubot completed a degree in Education, but continued taking various Fine Arts University classes for the next 15 years. Zubot taught the Arts Education program in public schools for 28 years. She also participated in numerous clay workshops, and residencies. Her most noteworthy sessions were with Christina West and Lisa Clague at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I like the suppleness, and strength that clay has as it is willingly transformed, both in form and texture. These attributes make clay the perfect medium for constructing my large, biomorphic vessels. I am trying to stretch out the simplicity of the structures with a muted palette of colour and design.

The sculptural vessels do not reference recognizable forms. By applying abstraction I am trying to focus on the contours of the vessels and possibly discover a structure that has no name, no defined angles, and no standards to support it’s free form. I only want one’s eye following a quiet line as it moves over the form it has created, and to move into the form as it has marked it.

I am trying to embrace the unforeseen possibilities that arise when I am building. These sculptural vessels are embracing an intuitive sensibility that emerges through their making.
