Aby Henry was born in Nuremberg, Germany while her parents were living there on a teaching exchange. She received her BA from University of Nevada, Reno with a major in ceramics and a minor in art history. She became the head of the ceramics department at Shop People maker space from 2013 to 2016. Aby is receiving her MFA in Craft from OCAC in Portland, Oregon. She attended a residency at Watershed Ceramic Center in Maine as well as a residency at Jingdezhen Private Studio in China this past summer. She presently resides in Portland, Oregon with her cat Fig.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Perlustration of Flesh

Skin is a curious human organ. It is one of the few organs that humans possess that is both visible and touchable. It is virtually impossible to hide all of one’s skin, so it remains a constant interface between you and the rest of the human experience.

Skin becomes a map of life experiences. Scars, stretching, and damage affect the skin whether these events are chosen or not. Skin is the cover of the book, carrying the evidence of a life lived.

This obsession with skin as a map of life experiences has brought me to my current body of work.
