sophia bartholomew is a queer non-binary femme and an interdisciplinary artist. Their practice is rooted in processes of reciprocity and unknowing — cycling through physical layers, membranes, endurance, protection, genuine care, absurdity, and exhaustion. They studied visual art and theory at UBC in Vancouver, and are currently based between Fredericton, New Brunswick and Montreal, Quebec.
In pursuing a socially contingent art practice since 2011, I have come to appreciate how social contracts formed within different spaces are both malleable and materially stubborn.
I conceive of my residency project as an adaptable ecology of component parts, through which I hope to affirm an embodied approach to art-making, and an investment in upholding values of impermanence, contingency, adaptability, empathy, and vulnerability.
