Thinking with Models Workshop with Zimra Beiner
January 7, 2025Plaster Mould Making for Slip Casting with Jocelyn Reid
January 7, 2025Workshop Description
This participant-lead course invites individuals interested in sculptural ceramics to explore and develop their own ceramic “voice” with internationally known artist Shary Boyle as their guide.
This intensive 10-day workshop will be an occasion to court risk and vulnerability in a supportive space, to hone and develop skills, and to practice community exchange. This workshop is also a great opportunity to test new approaches and ideas for graduate work or exhibition. Shary will be drawing from her 20 years of multimedia studio and collaborative practice to create an environment of collective conversation and learning among the workshop participants.
There will be one-on-one technical and concept feedback, a surprise workshop, and a professional slide lecture by Shary over the 10 days. Group and one-on-one critiques will help inform the path artists will take, but overall, this responsive class will be participant-driven.
Groundlings is intended for artists with at least a medium level of ceramic skill, as you must be able to work independently. Prepare to explore and communicate why you are making art, and for whom. We will be focused on hand building, coiling and glazing, not slip casting or molds.

Shary Boyle’s work considers the social history of ceramic figures, animist mythologies and folk-art forms to create a symbolic, feminist and politically charged language uniquely her own. Boyle received a 2021 Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design University where she graduated from in 1994, before developing a multidisciplinary practice centred on drawing, sculpture and performance. Boyle activates her practice through collaboration and mentorship, engaging other creative communities and disciplines with a characteristically inclusive spirit.
Shary Boyle has received the Gershon Iskowitz Prize, 2009, the Hnatyshan Award, 2010, and represented Canada at the Venice Biennial in 2013. Her solo exhibition Outside the Palace of Me organized by Toronto’s Gardiner Museum travelled to The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2022), the Vancouver Art Gallery (2023) and the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC (2023/24).
