Kasia Sosnowski is originally from Calgary, Alberta – she moved to Lethbridge in 2007. She graduated with honors from the University of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Fine Arts-Art History and Museum Studies, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts-Art Studio in 2014. She moved to Banff in 2014 where she worked at The Banff Center as a Preparatorial Practicum at the Walter Phillips Gallery. After completing her year contract as a practicum she participated in the Banff Centre’s Late Fall BAiR program where she began exploring ceramics. She now lives and works in Lethbridge, Alberta where she maintains her art practice.
I am interested in how objects and the experience of those objects can exist in the peripheries of language, where neither language nor representational methods are all encompassing. However, by unpacking and utilizing semiotics – linguistic, visual, and otherwise – we can illuminate difficult conversations, by which I mean intuitive, visceral, and innate dialogues. I want to uncover these residual feelings/dialogues so that they might become digestible. I am interested in juxtaposing language and object so that understanding comes before articulation
Lately I have been focusing on ideas around the body, transgressive bodies, phantom limb syndrome, loss, and ideas of ‘the self’. More specifically, exploring how the body is a site and vessel for our ideas of ‘self’ and how trauma, shock, or loss can affect our internalized image of ourselves. Additionally I am curious about the power that the physical manifestations of our bodies have over self-image, transgressive acts, gender identity, and embodiment of the abject.
