April 5, 2018Exhibition runs May 1—July 14, 2018
Opening May 17, 2018 from 6-8pm.
This exhibition is part of the 2018 Medalta International Artists in Residence program.
Long distance relationships make for many hours on the road. Over the years, Tyler Loeffler has been travelling up to 13 hours to see his partner. The exhibition, Along the Way, is a diary of the miles driven and the union between boy and girl.
The plates are a tribute to the road signs encountered in these drives, each symbol painstakingly hand rendered. Using his skills wheel throwing Tyler symbolizes the male and female forms through the vessels lining each wall. While the forms are separated here, representing the tension of being apart, there is happy ending; they meet in the centre for tea, at least on the weekends.
Artist statement
I’ve traveled this road many times and each journey is never the same.
Through wind, snow, rain and fog I doggedly push on through.
Cause It seems to me that wherever I am all roads lead back to you.
—Tyler Loeffler
Artist Biography
Hailing from the prairies, Tyler Loeffler is fortunate enough to call both Canada and the United States his home. Currently a student at Minot State University, Tyler aspires to become a studio potter in the future. Inspired by ancient Mediterranean forms, he creates functional work that aims to pay homage to these classical profiles in a modern way. Ultimately, he hopes that the pieces he creates can be passed down from generation to generation and bring joy through their use in everyday life.
