Sarindar Dhaliwal is a Toronto-based artist, born in the Punjab and raised in London, England. She received her BFA from University College Falmouth, UK, and her MFA from York University.

the Radcliffe Line and other Geographies, curated by Marcie Bronson (Rodman Hall, St. Catherines) toured to the Reach in Abbotsford, BC and the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa in 2015-16. Recently, Dhaliwal has participated in: Yonder (Koffler Gallery, 2016), Form Follows Fiction: Art and Artists in Toronto (Art Museum at the University of Toronto, 2016) and India Contemporary Photographic and New Media Art, (Asia Society Texas Center, Houston, 2018).

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work, multidisciplinary but thematically cohesive mediations on childhood memories and the experience of migration, focuses on not only how this affects the way we remember our formative years, but also how we recreate the past using personal and autobiographical narratives.

My artistic practice, concerned with issues of identity, the slippage between “here” and “there”, and, the intertwining of colonial histories is used as a psychological space in which to tell my stories, and “fix” some cultural dissonances that I experienced. Using past traumas to create densely poetic works in order to transform that ugliness into objects of beauty.
