Jeanne MacGrotty was born in suburbia Vancouver, which is now the large city of Coquitlam. She has a life long practice in drawing, painting, ceramic work, sculpture, writing stories, poetry and songs continuing into her gray years.
In 2005, Ms. MacGrotty started her art studies at North Island College, and continued on in the Emily Carr External BA program graduating in the spring of 2016.
Ms MacGrotty’s artistic practice has focused on developing imagery on clay tile and sculptures using multiple decorating techniques. The Comox Valley Art Gallery has showcased: Residual, a collection of her drawings with a ceramic installation in November of 2012; Monument to a Soldier, September 2013, in the CVAG Members show Hanging by a thread; and I put myself there, April 2016, in the ECU Grad show.
ARTISTS STATEMENT
Ms. MacGrotty works as a multi-disciplinary artist exploring and mixing mediums in her work. Ms. MacGrotty has developed her clay skills exploring decorating and firing techniques on two and three-dimensional clay sculptural works. Imagery is used to create contextual juxtapositions that will give the viewer something to ponder. She challenges the constraints of social ideology by creating tension between context and the interpretation of everyday items to showcase her personal philosophy around modern society. The viewer is engaged in a dialogue between two landscapes, an inner and an outer. The internal landscape is defined by the history of intimacies, family stories and feminine archetypes across cultures, which becomes an ontology that places us in the center.
