Born in Calgary, Canada, Emma Petropoulos received her Bachelors of Fine arts from
Alberta University of the Arts, and is a contemporary ceramic artist working in Alberta,
Canada. The domestic space is the source of Emma’s inspiration and consideration
when making vessels for the home. While making, Emma thinks about the domestic
space and how her work can function and be incorporated into the home for everyday
engagement, while creating an atmosphere of its own. Emma has participated in several
peer and department run shows throughout her degree, and is a recipient of the 7th
Annual Medalta Student Residency Award.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Focusing first on the form of the vessels, I combine elements from historically
geometric and voluminous forms and vases, while the textured surface decoration stems
from my interest in the materiality of clay itself. Taking into account clay’s fundamental
capacity for recording memory, I carve, stamp, rub and burnish the surfaces of the
vessels. Making alterations of the original form, slip is applied and removed, textures
are dominant yet isolated; the surface builds and creates its own rhythmic language,
allowing for increased visual dimension on a round form with the play of light and
shadows.
