Workshop Description
In this 5-day workshop, KC Adams will lead students to reflect back to the time of their Indigenous ancestors. They will learn about Indigenous pottery and the function of the vessels from a cultural and spiritual level. Indigenous vessels are a pedagogical tool in guiding Indigenous people to embrace Indigenous knowledge systems which can improve physical and mental well-being. Learn how to harvest, process clay, build vessels, fire, and cook with the pots in this 5-day intensive at Medalta. No experience working with clay is required but is encouraged.
Biography
KC Adams (Ininnew/Anishinaabe/British) is a registered Fisher River Cree Nation member living in Winnipeg. KC is a relational maker, educator, activist, and mentor who creates work that explores technology in relation to her Indigenous culture. Adams is an award-winning, nationally and internationally known maker with a B.F.A. from Concordia University and an M.A. in Cultural Studies, Curatorial Stream from the University of Winnipeg. KC has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, residencies and three biennales.
Artist Statement
I am Anishinaabe, Ininnew, and of British descent, and my Ininnew name is flying overhead in circles eagle woman. I create work exploring technology and its relationship to my Indigenous identity. My process is to start with an idea and use a medium that embodies my conceptual intent. I work in adornment, clay, installation, painting, photography, printmaking, public art, video, AR, and VR.
