Public Opening: Thursday June 29, 2017 6:00 – 8:00pm
Yuill Gallery, Medalta in the Historic Clay District
Artworks from contemporary artists Terrance Houle, Billie Rae Busby, Kris Weinmann, Rosanna Marmont, Heather Benning, Tim Moore, and Pascale Ouellet will fill the expansive Yuill Gallery at Medalta in the Historic Clay District, and opening night screening of Ghost Days by Terrance Houle.
I AM WESTERN, running June 29 – September 30 2017, is a postmodern interpretation of the cowboy and western genre; deconstructing, re-contextualizing, and modernizing the image of who we are with an eye and integrity to current realities.
The exhibition will include renown Calgary artist Terrance Houle, who will be performing in the abandoned IXL Brick factory where his ancestors of the Blood Tribe would have formerly camped and hunted. ‘If These Bricks Could Talk’ will explore the post-colonial reality using the metaphor of turning land into brick and vice versa.
Collectively, the seven hand picked artists will present their unique interpretations of a genre steeped in romanticism and tradition. I AM WESTERN seeks to continue the celebration of the West while being inclusive to a changing demography, landscape, economy and culture.
