April Martin holds a BA from McGill University (2009) and a BFA from Concordia in Montreal (2014). In 2016 she completed her MFA in Sculpture at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is recipient of numerous awards and has participated in residencies and exhibited work throughout Canada, The United States and Europe.

ARTIST STATEMENT

April Martin is a process based sculptor working in ceramics, textiles and metal. For her, making is the gesture that most reflects the energy of living things; including weather, wind and water.

In her work she makes material connections based on known and unknown histories and perceived values, as well as form, colour, texture. She considers the act of titling her work a form of spellcasting, an opportunity to highlight or reinforce the nuances of her research into her materials. Her work communicates a sense of wonder about the materials that make up our daily lives and – on a larger scale – our planet.
