Annette ten Cate is a graduate with High Honours of the Sheridan Craft and Design Program, in Ceramics and went on to do a year-long residency at the Medalta International Artist in Residence Program. She was honoured to have her exhibition Life on Earthenware travel around Alberta as part of the TREX SW program which reaches galleries, schools and also oers educational opportunities for students. Her studio practice is located in sunny Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, where you will also nd Canada’s Historic Clay District. She is represented by galleries and shops across Alberta.
I draw my inspiration from the natural world around me – simple scenes of animals and birds in their habitat. As I build an image in clay, my creation begins to take on its own life and shares its story of living in an environment often dominated by humans. While my primary mission as an artist is to create pleasing images, I want also to convey the importance of respecting and preserving nature and its inhabitants. By introducing humour and whimsy into my pieces, I hope to generate a connection that encourages people to delight in the nature that surrounds them.
