This exhibition is part of the 2019 Medalta International Artists in Residence program.
Rob Froese makes ceramic objects for use and contemplation – sculptures that carry the feeling of something found in the woods or on the beach; marked by forces of nature, and pottery forms that can be appreciated for their subtle surface qualities; rewarding searching fingers, the inquiring eye, and the imagination.
Using a variety of clays, slips, glaze layering, and firing methods, Rob works quickly with close attention to clay’s stages from fluid to solid. His working process combines chance with skill-based decision making.
The work for this exhibition, entitled Tone Poems, employs rhythmical, repetitive forming and display methods to suggest a mood or spark an idea.
As he develops new directions for his work from a foundation of an established pottery practice, Rob’s recent research has expanded areas of interest for him, including testing of various clay bodies and non-clay additions, experimenting with different methods of firing, and establishing connections between musical and ceramic working processes.
Artist Biography
Raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Rob Froese came to ceramics through a route of travel, work, and art studies. He has maintained studios and held numerous exhibitions of his work in Canada and Japan since 1998. His formal studies include a B.A (Art, English) from the University of Saskatchewan and a B.F.A (Ceramics) from the University of Regina. In 2018, He received his M.F.A in Craft Media program at the Alberta College of Art + Design in Calgary.
