Around the World in Clay is a group exhibition, created by members of the Medicine Hat Potter's Association.
Presented with the theme 'Around the World in Clay: An Exploration of Culture', artists have embraced the world around them, to discover what this prompt means to them. Some artists dug into history, learning that their own ancestors created ancient functional ware, while others learned techniques and embraced influence through travel and exploration of our world.
You will find work in this show guided by the earth we walk on, the human influence beyond our atmosphere, and perhaps even a touch of the underworld.
The pottery club has been preparing for the past year to bring you this show, which exhibits diverse approaches to working with clay, and interpreting the theme.
HISTORY OF MEDICINE HAT POTTER'S ASSOCIATION
The clay/ ceramics community in Medicine Hat was started at the Medicine Hat High School/College in the l 960's. The renowned Luke Lindoe was prominent in mentoring and teaching. Pioneers in establishing the early pottery clubs were, to name a few; Luke and Gail Lindoe, Lorine and James Marshall, Joan Van Belkum, Duncan Curry, Isabelle Sharp, Margaret Holmes, and Nancy-Ruth Sissons. These clay enthusiasts were instrumental in starting the "Alberta Potters Association" and "Alberta Craft Council".
During the 1970's a great effort was made to save the beautiful and historical St. Theresa's Academy to house a Cultural Center for the arts and a performing theater. Although this effort failed, the clay community thrived.
The present-day Cultural Centre opened on October 24, 1983. The Medicine Hat Pottery Guild was created at a meeting February 10, 1982 in preparation for the forthcoming Cultural Centre. The title Potter's Club was used from 1983-1990 when the Medicine Hat Potter's Association began to be used.
July 5, 1985. Memorandum of Agreement between the City of Medicine Hat and the Board of Governors of Medicine Hat College: Joint use of Cultural Facility." This agreement shall remain in force in perpetuity unless amended by agreement ofboth the Board of Governors ofMedicine Hat College and the City Council of the City of Medicine Hat".
This was eventually amended to turn over several of the city managed rooms to the college, leaving the Medicine Hat Potter's Association studio and other designated studios under city control.
It is a lovely facility to use, with windows on three sides overlooking the ponds and green space. With 24-hour coded access it provides space for an all hours club.
