Last year was Medalta’s first international call for entry for our cup show and the response from the community both in Medicine Hat and online was fantastic, so we knew we had to do it again… but we felt like we wanted to switch things up. In September 2013 with our SExSE invitational residency (South East Alberta by South East Asia) when the talented Vipoo Srivilasa challenged all of our residents to a spoon competition we were hooked… and we started seeing spoons everywhere. With this object – that has gone in and out of fashion – making a serious comeback in studio ceramics, we decided to extend the challenge to our international invitational exhibition . . . SPOONS are the NEW cup!
This year, we are exhibiting 125 interpretations of the spoon narrowed down from nearly 290 entries which came to us from 10 countries. In Canada we received entries from 8 Provinces and 1 Territory. What a great response! Thank you to all of the artists who entered.
This exhibition is generously supported by some really great people too! Canadian ceramic rockstar Carole Epp from Musing About Mud had the task of jurying the pieces for the exhibition. She did a fantastic job and we’re looking forward to seeing these pieces in Medalta’s gallery. Once the spoons arrive for the exhibition Carole will have the harder task of choosing award winners and the Grand Prize of a June 2015 Medalta residency, which will be announced at the opening. Make sure to keep an eye out for spoon show coverage on Musing about Mud as Carole will be featuring posts about several of the artists and the exhibition.
“My experiences with jurying exhibitions have taught me numerous things. They have educated me about my own aesthetic leanings, and they have truly opened my eyes to the expanse of amazing skilled artists within the craft sector. Perhaps most obviously they have taught me about how difficult it is to jury an exhibition of my peers. My considerations have included not only skill and ingenuity within the parameters of the theme of the exhibition, but also what would constitute a cohesive and dynamic exhibition. The task was difficult and there were many excellent submissions that sadly weren’t included. I’m honored by the opportunity to jury this exhibition and am grateful to Medalta. I am thankful to all of the applicants for sharing their work and for putting themselves out there. I do hope you will enjoy the exhibition.”
Thank you to Medicine Hat College, a major sponsor of this exhibition, for increasing their donation this year. Their funds are matched by Medalta for purchase prizes for the overall winners of the exhibition. These award winners become part of Medalta’s permanent contemporary ceramics collection, a continued source of inspiration to the ceramic artists who visit our residency program and the public who visit the Medalta Museum.
We’ve got a talented community of makers that we are proud to share with you in Spoon Me. We hope you enjoy the show whether online or in person @Medalta.
