Jim Etzkorn

Jim Etzkorn, a graduate of The Alberta College of Art and Design, has been a studio potter and educator for the past twenty years. He furthered his education through residencies at the Banff Center, the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana and Tokoname, Japan.

Jim has taught at the University of Manitoba, Red Deer College, Alberta College of Art and Design and Kootenay School of Art . his work is represented in public and private collections in Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Britain, Holland, Spain and throughout North America.

Jim makes functional and decorative work that finds expression through the exploration of form. These symmetrical forms which are made on the wheel, are often altered (squared or ovaled). While in Japan in 1987, Jim was influenced by cast iron kettles that were part of the tea ceremony. His work emulates that surface by using a bronze glaze further embellished with rope impressions similar to Neolithic Japanese pottery, thus heightening the sensuality of the objects by visual and tactile texture. Jim’s work is a synthesis of Oriental antiquity and Western contemporary sensibility.
